On Saturday, January 31, volunteer fire and EMS members from across St. Mary’s County gathered at Bay District Station 9 for a comprehensive training session on the roles and responsibilities of an Incident Safety Officer (ISO). Despite freezing temperatures hovering around 15 degrees and lingering ice from a recent snowstorm, 22 dedicated volunteers participated in the course.

The class was facilitated by Past Fire Chief Shawn Downs and focused on ensuring responders understand and can implement best safety practices during emergency incidents. Topics covered included:

  • Core responsibilities of an Incident Safety Officer

  • Procedures for investigating apparatus and personnel injuries

  • Station safety best practices

  • Mental health considerations for fire and EMS personnel

  • Fireground-tested safety tactics

The session was hosted by the Safety Committee of the St. Mary's County Fireboard Association and was well received by attendees. Participants left with practical, experience-driven tools to help keep both responders and the public safe during emergencies.

“These trainings are essential for developing a strong safety culture within our departments,” said one participating member. “It’s not just about preventing injuries—it’s about making sure everyone goes home.”
